Insomnia and Stem Cell Quality

Insomnia is commonly defined as a sleep disorder in which an affected individual may have trouble falling and/or staying asleep. This disorder often being overlooked by the public probably due to lack of awareness regarding the danger of disrupted sleep cycle. Anyone can have trouble in falling / staying asleep. However, diagnosing Insomnia become significant when they cause distress or interfere with a person daily functioning.

There is no single established cause of insomnia. Different people have different reasoning on what hinder them from getting a good night sleep. It may be as simple as lacking of exercise, easily interrupted sleep cycle, heavy caffein drinker or may be due to late night overthinking, anxiety or depression. It can often occur alongside other health conditions. Despite the cause of sleep disorder, the one who’s going through it should get help because it has a significant negative impact on the body.

Insomnia is often left untreated due to lack of awareness. Enough sleep is crucial because our body need a proper rest to reset. Once it reached severe stage, it can affect an individually physically and mentally including;

  • Lower performance on the job or at school

  • Slowed reaction time while driving and a higher risk of accidents

  • Mental health disorders, such as depression, an anxiety disorder or substance abuse

  • Increased risk and severity of long-term diseases or conditions, such as high blood pressure and heart disease

  • Significant effect on reducing Stem Cell Quality

Poor sleep quality negatively impacts the stem cell quality in the body. Studies show that a good night’s sleep has the ability to keep stem cells younger for longer. Circadian rhythm is the 24-hour internal clock in our brain that regulates cycles of alertness and sleepiness. Findings show that when circadian rhythm is disrupted, it impacts our whole body – including the performance of stem cells.

The bottom line, it may be only significant to diagnose someone with Insomnia only when it interferes with their daily functioning. But it is equally important for anyone who has concerns about their sleep quality. Don’t wait until it become severe enough to interrupt your daily life.
